Breast is Best VS Fed is Best

 Can we talk about the only 2 terms we have when it comes to breastfeeding? Breast is Best vs Fed is Best - & I hate them both. 😡

First off, can I just say DUH fed is best -typically mothers don’t want to starve their children. Yet, we hold this phrase over every mama that used formula like a dark grey umbrella. If you turn to formula, for whatever reason, you don’t need to feel shameful of that decision.

Which brings me to the Breast is Best term. Yes, breastmilk is fucking amazing. It is the superhero of the liquid world. But breast isn’t always best for some families and this term gets thrown around like a machete, aimed at cutting down parents that chose a different route.

Can we just start saying that when it comes to feeding your child, Education is Best? There is so much misinformation out there and we need to start having honest conversations & look into the facts before making such an important decision.

Breastfeeding is hard. It’s the hardest thing that I’ve ever had to do & I was informed. There’s so much more to it than just “put babe to breast, feed babe, the end.” There’s an emotional aspect, there’s how the breast actually works, there’s plugged ducts & leaky nipples and pumping, ugh so much pumping. And there is more to formula than just “put formula in bottle, shake, the end.” There is the securing fresh, clean water, remembering to pack it, buying it before it runs out, upset tummies, sensitivities & ugh, which one do you even buy?! 😱

Before you decide which is best for you (and both are really, really good options), take a breastfeeding course, go to a support group, research different types of formulas. Learn what a low supply really means or how breastfeeding should never be painful. Search what a galactagog is and exactly where formula is made. And know that sometimes plans change - you have to go back to work, you really don’t like pumping, you decide to try & re-lactate or you’ve just simply changed your mind. And if those plans change, you won’t have to worry about which is “best” - you’ll be informed & educated & you’ll already know what’s right for you and your family. 🙌🏼
