New Year, Same Me...Just a Little Bit Different

Lovers! I'm back after what felt like an incredibly long break. I hope you're all as excited as I am to start the New Year!

This is the month when resolutions get made and very shortly after, resolutions get broken. 2016 held a lot of changes for me both personally and professionally and 2017 is absolutely going to bring even more changes in those areas! With that in mind, I decided that I wouldn't be making any resolutions this year. Instead, I've decided to make lifestyle changes. My thinking is that resolutions are easy to break and easy to forget but lifestyle changes aren't so easy to bend. With a new, tiny life being brought into this world I wanted to make more meaningful changes than just "Eat better!" or "Go to the gym more!" I want to make changes that will help me be the best mama and the best person I can be for the rest of my life, not just the rest of the month.

One of the biggest things I want to make a shift in is to not be so hard on myself. I talked a little bit about this in an earlier post and I want to keep going easy on myself. We all have our faults and hold guilt about something that we *should* have done. My husband is great at reminding me that I need to take a breath, take a moment, and not hold onto any negative feelings. We like to say that you can be upset or sad or angry about something for a certain amount of time and then you need to move on! Those are the kinds of coping skills I want to instill in Baby and the best way to do that is to practice what I preach.

This picture was taken after I had literally almost cried because we were going to a party and I was feeling HUGE. It was the first time I really struggled to find something to wear since being pregnant and I almost gave up and said I didn't want to go. Instead I took a breath, took a moment to remember that I'm growing a life INSIDE OF ME, and moved on. It ended up being an awesome night!

I want to continue to make an effort to connect to people. I tend to be happier by myself than in a huge group of people but I started to think that I don't need to connect with everyone at a party, I just need to have one meaningful conversation. We're an "I'm fine, thanks." society and it's so easy to just say whatever you think the other person wants to hear. I'm an incredibly blunt person but to really connect with a person, you need to reach out, listen, and engage. That was a HUGE reason behind the beginning of this blog. I'd see parents struggling, I'd hear caregivers complaining and instead of starting a meaningful conversation where I could let them know that they're not alone or that there might be an easy fix to their problem, I would just sit there and think it. This blog was the first step in reaching out and connecting and the next is making those connections in real life!

Another thing this blog has helped with is documenting life! If you can believe it, I tend to forget to take pictures. I tend to be the one that will stop to take a photo of pretty flower but not remember to take a moment to capture something really big. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to live behind a camera but my dad is a photographer and he taught be so many amazing skills to save a special moment in a photo. The hubs and I have started to make little videos for Baby, documenting little moments in life that will hopefully make Baby laugh someday. I loved looking at photos and film of my parents when they were younger and I want Baby to have that same joy. I also want to prove that at one point Mom and Dad were cool, right?!

Making sure the Hubs got a good pic with the newly built crib he worked hard on! Of course, I have to document all the yummy vegan meals I eat!

2017 promises to bring some big changes, big moments, and a very special Little One. Hopefully these simple changes will start me down a path where I'm the person I strive to be, everyday and not just the month of January.

What about you? Do you make resolutions? How long are you able to keep them?
